32-year-old arrested for attempted murder of girlfriend

JOHANNESBURG – The police have urged women in abusive relationships to speak out and expose the culprit.

Police have arrested a 32-year-old suspect for attempted murder on 12 September on the corner of Nugget and President streets.

According to Johannesburg Central Police Station’s spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, the man is suspected of shooting a 33-year-old woman in his apartment on 16 December. “The so-called boyfriend accused his girlfriend [at the time] of not telling people that he is her husband and not a boyfriend.

“He assaulted her with fists and shot her once in the upper body. He left her in his room and an ambulance took her to hospital.”

An investigation is still underway and the suspect is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.

Mbele appealed to women in abusive relationships to speak out and expose the culprit. “Silence is no longer golden…police are here to help every woman in an abusive relationship.”

Details: Johannesburg Central Police Station 011 497 7000.
