Police urge women to report abusers

JOHANNESBURG – Police urges women not to suffer in silence.

With the high rate of media reports on gender-based violence in South Africa, members of the Johannesburg Central Police Station visited female health workers in the CBD to speak about the importance of reporting this crime.

South Africa has seen various protests and demonstrations with both men and women calling for strict laws to fight gender-based violence in the country.

In his lecture on 25 September, the spokesperson for the station, Captain Xoli Mbele, told medical students from GEM Health Care Students on the corner of Albertina Sisulu and Kruis streets in the CBD, that they shouldn’t suffer in silence.

Mbele spoke to the students about the effects of domestic violence and different kinds of abuse and emphasised that by not reporting abusers, ‘you support and advance perpetrators’ evil doings’. “We urged them to report any kind of abuse to the police so they can be equipped with necessary information on what to do. They were also explained how to apply for a protection order to ensure that the perpetrator does not get any more chance to violate them and their rights.

“A real man will never even raise his voice when having an argument with his partner…a real man will never lift his hand against any women and most importantly, real men protect women and treat them with dignity and respect.”

Mbele added that working together with the community and the police, will surely subdue the escalation of violence against women and children.

He urged people, especially women, to speak out before it is too late and emphasised that police are always there to help.
