Community organisations receive PEPFAR’s Awards

KEW – Community organisations receive PEPFAR"s HIV/AIDS Community Grants Awards

The Ububele Educational and Psychotherapy Trust based in Kew was one of the 40 community-based organisations from all provinces which were recipients of HIV/Aids Community Grants.

HIV/Aids Community Grants is a programme of the President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief, a United States governmental initiative.

Recipients of the grants were selected after a highly competitive process and they will receive a grant worth about US$42 000 (about R600 000) from the programme over the next two years. The recipients who were honoured at a ceremony in Johannesburg are organisations which provide a range of services, including HIV testing and counselling, HIV prevention services and care and support for people living with HIV.

According to the programme’s communications manager Rue Rushwaya, community organisations are essential to South Africa’s continued HIV response.

“This is because they understand their communities best and they are often a person’s first point of entry into HIV care and treatment,” said Rushwaya.

Through the programme, the critical role that organisations must play in their shared efforts with the government of South Africa, NGOs and civil society to control the HIV epidemic is recognised.

“We’re proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with South Africa in the HIV response,” said Rushwaya. “We have partnered with the government of South Africa to support HIV prevention and treatment since 2004 and invested more than $6 billion (about R80 billion) in HIV programmes in South Africa.”
