Local church opens its doors to the community
ORCHARDS – The whole idea is to show people that the church has services that are designed to assist them overcome their challenges.
St Luke’s Church in Orchards will on 19 October open its doors as part of their annual Open Day Festival to extend their services to the community.
The 116-year-old church situated on High Road will showcase its variety of services as part of their outreach programme to the community.
There will be fitness classes for elderly citizens over the age of 60 years old, a Pilates session for everyone and support groups for those who need social assistance with their life’s challenges.
According to one of the organisers, Jenny Marcus, there will be a variety of activities throughout the day from 10am to 2pm.
“We will also have counselling sessions for alcoholics and narcotics [users] as well as overeaters which are free and private,” she said.
“We will also have spiritual formations where people are able to meditate and retreat. The whole idea is to show that the church can help you overcome your challenges.
“This will also give people who are interested in joining our church a chance to come and see what kind of a church is St Luke’s.”
The church is a heritage site and visitors will be able to view all its history and beautiful garden.
“So, everyone is invited and there will be plenty of food, tea and other refreshments for people to enjoy themselves on the day,” she concluded.
The church also has other programmes including a feeding scheme where about 100 people come on Thursdays to be served healthy food and an initiative to help unemployed people in the community.
