Innovative app helps Zim nationals quickly send groceries to family members in Zimbabwe

“Why should feeding your family be a privilege?” said CEO of the Hello Group, Moosa Manjra.
The group has recently created an innovative app helping Zimbabweans living in South Africa to send groceries to their families in Zimbabwe with same-day delivery.
“Zim nationals have resorted to inconsistent services such as taxis and buses to transport the goods they have purchased in South Africa to Zimbabwe. This can be a long and frustrating process,” said Manjra.
The new Malaicha.com app allows South Africans and Zimbabwe nationals to choose from a range of 300 non-perishable items which are available in storehouses in Zimbabwe.
The Hello Group welcomed journalists to their offices in Rosebank on 16 October to experience a day in the life of a Zimbabwe national. Reporters went to town, bought groceries, wrapped groceries, sent them on the bus, saw the bus delay etc and compared this to using Malaicha.com.
“Sending money to Zimbabwe can mean so little because the value of their currency can change from the time you pick up the item in the isle to when you pay for it at the cashier. The availability of basic commodities isn’t there, salaries aren’t going up and the grocery isles are empty,” said Manjra.
He added that South African employers could also use the app to assist their staff to send food to their families.
Malaicha is a Ndebele word meaning ‘to transport goods to and from’, which the Hello Group thought appropriate for their speedy service.
Zimbabwe national Augustine Maphosa said he often sent his family money or bought groceries for them in South Africa.
“When I use the bus service, they charge me an additional 50 per cent of the price of the goods for the service, but it’s still cheaper than buying groceries in Zim,” said Maphosa.
He added that it was tough for his family members to find employment because of the state of the economy in Zimbabwe.
Maphosa has tried using the app and recommends it to others.
