Norwood CPF and SAPS work together in fight against crime

HOUGHTON – The Norwood SAPS and CPF were given an opportunity to elaborate on how they plan to fight crime at the Lower Houghton Ratepayers Association AGM.

The Lower Houghton Ratepayers Association annual general meeting held at The Old Edwardian Society in Houghton also looked at security and safety.

Recently elected Norwood Community Policing Forum (CPF) member Colin Wasserfall said they were looking to improve the relationship between the community and police. He added that they meet once a month with Norwood Police Station and were in the process of forming an executive CPF which will reach all sectors including Melrose and areas around Louis Botha.

Station Commander at Norwood Police Station, Colonel Phethole Mahasha said it is important for the police to work closely with the community.

“A mandate was given to the police to provide safety and investigate anything that threatens the safety of a community. It is also within the police mandate to bring perpetrators of crime to justice and root out causes of crime.”

He added that for them to win the battle against crime, everyone, including security companies, needed to come together. He gave a list of subcommittees which are also necessary which include community patrollers, neighbourhood watch and the youth desk.

Mahasha said, “We have four sectors and in all of them we need sector crime forums formed.”
