Ort SA celebrates teachers

HOUGHTON ESTATE – Teachers who participated in the SA-Ort Foundation and Inter-Sen mathematics and coding projects receive awards.

The Ort SA hosted an award ceremony to celebrate teachers who participated in the Ort SA–Stet Foundation and Inter-Sen Phase mathematics and coding projects.

The project took place in schools around Johannesburg and Daveyton.

Moabi Maropeng, the Johannesburg East District chief education specialist was a guest speaker. He thanked and awarded teachers with certificates for their participation in the project.

The learners presented what they have been learning throughout the year in front of the audience.

The Grade 3 school learners showcased their mathematics skills by demonstrating how to calculate sums using a number line, model drawing and also how to do grouping and sharing.

High school pupils showcased some of the apps they created during their coding class and explained the problem it will solve.

One of the apps that stood out was ‘Bus Companion’ developed by learners from Curtis Nkondo School of Specialisation in Soweto.

They said, “The purpose of the app is to work as a communication tool between a bus driver and learners who travel to school. The app allows the bus driver to notify occupants when the bus is leaving the depot and the approximate time it will reach pick-up points in real time. This prevents learners from missing the bus and reducing late coming.”

Thoko Enid Mahlangu, a foundation phase maths teacher at Ntsikana Primary School who was trained by OrtT SA’s maths facilitator, Chamu Mawire said, “I am thankful for all the strategies which he taught us which help young learners with numeracy. As teachers, we never took an oath after graduating but now because of Stet and Ort SA we are going to take one and say we are going to teach and give these learners a solid phase in mathematics.”
