Fifth mobile clinic launched
JEEPSTOWN – The City of Johannesburg's outgoing executive mayor Herman Mashaba launched the fifth mobile clinic to extend access to healthcare in Johannesburg.
The City of Johannesburg launched another mobile clinic which will serve the community of the inner-city, Jeppestown and the surrounding areas.
The clinic was launched by the outgoing executive mayor, Herman Mashaba, MMC for Health and Social Development, Mpho Phalatse and MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services, Ntombi Khumalo.
This is the fifth mobile clinic to be launched in the city with five more set to be rolled out in other areas by June 2020.
As part of extending access to healthcare, the City has resolved to roll out mobile clinics to areas and communities that were, and continue to be, excluded from the health care system.
The clinics, a R3.7 million project, will offer various services including HIV counselling and testing, antiretroviral treatment, and TB screening and treatment. It will also include mother and child treatment, EPI immunisation, integrated management of childhood diseases, antenatal screening, family planning services, pap smears and prostate cancer screening.
Patients will be served by a staff complement of nine, including nurses and an assistant, admin assistant, a general worker and a driver.
“To be able to reach as many of our residents in need of primary healthcare attention, the City has identified areas that will be served by the mobile clinic. Thus, a timetable has been devised to reach those who require the services on offer,” said Mashaba.
The mobile clinic will visit Booysens informal settlement from 8am to 3pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, George Koch informal settlement from 8.30am to 3pm on Wednesdays and Mangolongolo informal settlement from 8.30am to 3pm on Thursdays.
“I would like to thank the members of this coalition government, the IFP, ACDP, Cope, UDM and Freedom Front Plus, for their continued support in delivering quality basic services to our residents,” said Mashaba.
He added that he was thankful for the contributions of the EFF which, although not a member of the coalition, voted on an issue by issue basis.
