Building a new smarter Joburg
NEWTOWN – Inner City Partnership Forum was held in Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown, where many stakeholders discussed ways to improve public-private partnership in rejuvenating the inner city.
City of Johannesburg leaders attended the Inner City Partnership Forum at Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown to engage about the Inner City Rejuvenation Plan on 5 November.
Attendees included mayor Herman Mashaba, MMC Development Planning Reuben Masongo and private stakeholders as the forum discussed improving relations in the public-private partnership in rebuilding the inner-city.
Mashaba said, “I want to thank you for embracing the rejuvenation of Johannesburg after it has been neglected for a long time. This forum supports the collaboration of the public and private sector to achieve sustainable growth for the city.”
He added that the rejuvenation project for the inner-city had seen it turn into a construction site and had created employment. The mayor hopes when he leaves office on 27 November, the new mayor will continue the work he started with the initiatives in place to rejuvenate the inner-city.

CEO of Sci-Bono Discovery Centre and chairperson of the Newtown Improvement District, Dr More Chakane said the sharing of initiatives make such forums worthwhile, a partnership that could grow the inner-city and create development.
Beautifying the city was also discussed and artist Hannelie Coetzee spoke on Public Art Building Future Cities. She has worked closely with Joburg Roads Agency and Johannesburg Development Agency by combining art to rejuvenate the inner-city.

Other private stakeholders such as FNB, Rand Club and the University of Johannesburg provided information on the importance of Johannesburg being an innovative city, having sustainable development with a smart city that will have less of a carbon footprint.
