Bank of Lisbon demolition confirmed for Sunday
INNER CITY – During the demolishing times, residents who reside around the Bank of Lisbon will be temporarily accommodated at Bank City, said Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure Development, Tasneem Motara.
The Bank of Lisbon building in the Joburg CBD where three firefighters died extinguishing a fire will finally be demolished on 24 November, said the Johannesburg Inner City Partnership in a Facebook post.
In a released statement by Rofhiwa Marubini on behalf of the Gauteng government, Marubini said following an assessment conducted by structural engineers, a decision to implode the building was taken and is set to take place on Sunday at 9am.
“The fire that engulfed the multi-story building in 2018 which claimed the lives of three firefighters, caused extensive damage to the building,” said Marubini.
Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure Development, Tasneem Motara, on 20 November, announced that a contractor had been awarded a tender and pre-demolishing works have commenced.
“Jet Demolition (Pty) Ltd, has been contracted as part of a competitive bidding process to provide the implosion service. The contractor has completed the pre-demolition process that includes decanting, salvaging, stripping of walls, ceilings, and carpets, wrapping of the walls and demolition of basement floor slaps around the main structure core,” said Motara
Motara added that during the demolishing times, residents who reside around the Bank of Lisbon will be temporarily accommodated at Bank City.
The following streets will be closed on 23 November: Diagonal, Helen Joseph, Albertina Sisulu, Ntemi Piliso, Commissioner, Pixley ka Isaka Seme, Commissioner and Fraser. Corner of Albertina Sisulu, Pixley Ka Seme, and Helen Joseph Streets will be imploded on 24 November.
“The project, including clearing of the site, will be completed in March 2020. The site will then be prepared to meet accommodation needs for the provincial government,” said Marubini.
Johannesburg Inner City Partnership said the exclusion zone will be evacuated at 5am. Roads will remain blocked into the early morning of 25 November and will be opened for peak hour traffic.
