Highlands North Ratepayers and Residents Association is launched
HIGHLANDS NORTH – The Highlands North Ratepayers and Residents Association was officially launched with the aim to work cohesively and progressively with both ordinary residents and business within the area.
The Highlands North Ratepayers and Residents Association (HINRRA) was officially launched on 27 November at the Waverly Sports Club. The voluntary non-profit, non-party political and non-sectarian association was attended by residents including Ward 74 councillor Dave Fisher.
Interim chairman during the meeting, Eckart Zollner said the aim of the inaugural meeting was to draft and adopt the association’s constitution as well as elect committee members. “We followed the model of other successful residents’ associations and adopted what works for us. As an association and community, we have a stronger voice in raising issues such as overcrowding, illegal occupation and drug dealing with the rightful entities,” Zollner said.
Committee member Lisa Blass added that there would be no subscription fee to join the association as all the executive committee work would be voluntary.
Fisher said residents’ associations were beneficial because their WhatsApp groups made it easier for people to report issues that require attention from the council. “There are a lot of potential investments and developments that we can work on. Let’s form an interactive and cohesive unit in order to keep lights working, potholes filled and rebuild the socio-economic status of the country,” Fisher said.
Zollner went through the drafted constitution which residents approved and adopted.
Here are some points highlighted within the constitution;
- The area covered by the association includes the suburbs of Highlands North with all its extensions but excludes the area covered by the Highlands North Extension Residents Association.
- The association aims to ensure that the natural environment is protected and safeguarded.
- Membership of the association shall be of two classes which are ordinary membership and business membership.
- The annual general meeting of the association shall be held before the last day of November each year.
Attendants nominated officials to serve in the executive committee and the officials will be elected into their different roles to be announced to residents within a month.
