Capri Wheelers Cycling Club celebrates life at the Huddle Park Golf Course
JOBURG – Capri Wheelers Cycling Club hosts a cycling event to raise money for charity.
More than 100 cyclists of Capri Wheelers Cycling Club participated in The Celebration of Life Ride event to raise funds for charity on 1 December at Huddle Park golf course.
This follows a decision taken last year when the club decided to celebrate the life of Howard Tucker, a passionate member and the fifth anniversary of his recovery from Guillain Barre Syndrome.
In this year’s event, Tucker along with the Capri committee decided to explore another revenue source in their bid to raise funds through this annual event. It was decided that this year the riders would part take in a 50km cycling loop, not once but three times, in an effort to raise as much money for charity as possible.
About 75 cyclists arrived at Huddle Park at 5.30am on 1 December for the first loop along with special guest Brent Botha, a soigneur (non-riding member of a team) of the Israeli Cycling Academy. The first loop ended at about 7.30am and the cyclists returned to Huddle Park where refreshments were served before they embarked on their second loop.
At this point, the Capri committee were blown away to see that the attendance of cyclists had way exceeded the 100 people mark for the second lap in support of this amazing event.
The DL Link and Community Security Organisation (CSO) were nominated as beneficiaries of all the proceeds raised from the event. Prior to the event, various raffle tickets were sold to raise money and numerous prizes were donated to be raffled off at the end of the day.
There was an amazing spirit at the event and after the second lap the cyclists enjoyed a talk by Geoff Capstickdale, founder and CEO of Peaceforce Security, whose company is the main sponsor of the club.
Thereafter, there was an inspiring talk from Michelle Goodman of the DL Link about what her organisation did for people suffering from terminal illnesses and a representative of CSO who outlined the role the organisation played in the community.

Selwyn Sanders, chairperson of the club, thanked the cyclists for their support and generous donation of their time to take part in this worthy cause. He said his initial goal was to raise enough money to cover the costs of the event but then with the support and push of the committee, a new target of 150 raffles was set.
“The club members outdid themselves by managing to purchase more than 400 raffle tickets which assisted us to raise close to R20 000 for the two charities,” Sanders said.
