Reea residents receive crocheted blankets from local knitters

CRAIGHALL PARK – Reea residents were in good spirits after receiving donations of blankets on 17 January.

Residents at Reea Foundation in Craighall Park were thankful for the donation of beautiful crocheted blankets from the Knitting Buddies on 17 January.

The Knitting Buddies are a group of avid knitters including Di Slatter, Dawn Lewis and Mel Jones who usually knit for the 67 Blankets for Mandela initiatives. This year, they decided to donate to their chosen beneficiary – Reea.

Slatter said, “I like Reea because it’s run beautifully. I donate lots of items to their charity shop and thought it would be nice to support the people here.”

The Knitting Buddies regularly knit in the tea garden outside the Reea bookshop while enjoying the tranquillity of the surroundings. The women each knit an average of two or three blankets per week so it didn’t take long for them to complete the task of knitting 49 blankets for Reea.

Reea is a home for 39 residents suffering from epilepsy and associated illnesses between the ages of 18 and 70. General manager at Reea Alex Sheffield said, “We have 39 residents in the home, who will each receive a blanket. The remainder of the blankets will be donated to the staff.”

“This is their [the residents’] home, so they are very sentimental when it comes to their personal belongings. These blankets will be an amazing comfort to them.”

Sheffield said Reea is always looking for assistance from the community in the form of volunteers and donations in kind. Items to donate include paint, clothes, groceries, dry goods and garden assistance to name a few.
