Residents and motorists in Waverly share Athol Streets with human waste flowing down the street

WAVERLY – The ward councillor said the blockage on Athol Street was receiving attention from the City’s water utility.

A sewage leak is causing a health hazard for residents and schoolchildren of Waverley Girls High near the intersection of Athol and Knox streets.

A resident, Tracy Langlois said the leak was reported to the local councillor David Fisher on 31 January but claimed nothing had been done to solve the problem.

“The leak which is on the pavement of the road across Waverley Girls High School was reported by numerous community members to the City of Joburg,” said Lanblois. “The local councillor David Fisher also tried to get the problem solved but all those attempts couldn’t bear fruit. The human waste that is flowing on the surface of the road poses health hazards to community members and schoolchildren.”

In response, Ward 74 councillor Fisher said, “Joburg Water attempted to clear the blockage using rods but it was not successful. They then stepped up and brought in a jetting machine which was also not successful. They are waiting for a more powerful machine and the matter is receiving priority.”
