Ward 87 councillor Bridget Steer shared more guidance on how residents can escalate issues with her help. She said if your electricity or water meter readings are incorrect, take a photo of the meter (include reading, meter number and proof of date) and email City of Joburg the following information:
- Name
- Address
- Account number
- Meter number
- Meter Reading
- Date.
“They will reply with a reference number. Please keep this so I can escalate any issues over 30 days (one billing cycle). If you don’t have email you can call the customer centre or visit the nearest customer centre (Randburg or Thuso House Braamfontein),” said Steer. She added that after 30 days, residents can email her their previous correspondence together with the latest reading and a photo of the current meter reading so that she can escalate the issue.
If there is a wrong meter on an account (meter exchanges not captured on the bill) residents can email Steer the details as follows:
- Name
- Address
- Contact number
- Account number
- Old meter number (and closing reading if you have it)
- New meter number and actual reading.
For residents interested in converting to prepaid meters, Steer said they can only do so if they have a smart meter and their City of Joburg account is current. “Please go the Randburg walk-in centre on Jan Smuts Avenue and corner Bram Fischer Drive. This is a City of Joburg process not a City Power process. Most important is to pay the fee and get a notification number. Keep the receipt safe in case you need me to escalate,” advised Steer.
She added that to escalate prepaid meter conversions over 30 days (once one has made and paid for their application and has a 700-reference number) they can email her. The councillor said there are various rebates and rate clearance refunds available from City of Joburg and residents can visit the City’s site to access application forms and learn more
