R9 000 for funeral arrangements stolen at Bree taxi rank

JOBURG CENTRAL – One suspect is on the run while his accomplice has been arrested.


One supsect is on the run after the police arrested his accomplice, a 20-year-old man for armed robbery on the corner of Jeppe and Rissik streets in Johannesburg Central on 17 February at about 2pm.

The spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station Captain Xoli Mbele said, “It is alleged that the brother of the 30-year-old male victim had withdrawn R9 000 from the ATM and given it to his brother on Wanderers Street. The money was for funeral arrangements of his sister in Bloemfontein. While on his way to Bree taxi rank, he was bumped by a male on the corner of Bree Street and Rissik Street.”

Mbele added that an argument ensued between the two and the male suspect was joined by his accomplice and they threatened the victim with a knife. They searched the victim and took the R9 000 and fled the scene.

The victim saw the police nearby and alerted them to what had just happened. Officers searched for the suspects and found the one perpetrator. “Police searched him and recovered the knife used in the commission of the crime. His accomplice is still at large with the money.”

Police are investigating the incident and the suspect is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 19 February.
