Bramley’s Stacey Fru celebrates World Read Aloud Day at Rosary College

BRAMLEY – Blind SA gave away 18 copies of the book Tim's Answer to 18 learners from different schools.


Child author, Stacey Fru celebrated World Read Aloud Day with children at Holy Rosary College in Johannesburg on 21 February and one her stories was also read on the day.

Stacey, a resident of Bramley and a learner at Sacred Heart College in Observatory, was commissioned to write a story for Blind SA shortly after the launch of her 4th and 5th books.

Stacey said she was honoured that Blind SA holds her work in such high esteem. “In September 2019, Blind SA translated my 5th book into Braille and Daisy formats. Shortly after, they appointed me to write a story for World Read Aloud Day.”

The 13-year-old said she wrote the story The Sign to share the joys of friendship, love and relationships both at home and school. “The Sign is about a girl who goes to a new school in her final year in primary school and how she coped alongside other realities.”

Blind SA organises its Read Aloud Day on 21 February each year to commemorate International Braille Day, International Mother-tongue Language Day and to promote the culture of reading and writing for blind and partially sighted children in the country.

To make this day extra special, Blind SA gave away 18 copies of the book Tim’s Answer to 18 learners from different schools. These learners participated in a spelling competition and quiz. Stacey added, “They bought copies of my books for learners and got me to set 20 questions [10 spelling words and 10 questions] for a competition to win copies of my book.

“What a fun journey I have had with Blind SA, my number-one organisation spearheading literacy.”
