Operation Okae Molao sees 80 undocumented immigrants arrested and R26-million worth of counterfeit goods confiscated in JHB CBD

JHB CBD – Goods worth 26-million were recovered in a joint operation this afternoon in the Johannesburg CBD.

A joint search operation was conducted on 13 March in the Johannesburg CBD by the South African Police Service (SAPS), Gauteng Traffic Police, City of Johannesburg emergency services, ER24 and personnel of brand manager owners.

In the operation, counterfeit goods worth R26 million were recovered alongside money that amounted to more than R400 000.

The police also received information of an illegal trade operation that was being carried out on the corner of Jeppe and Von Wielligh streets in the CBD.

“On arrival at the building, police discovered different kinds of branded clothing and footwear of international sports and luxury clothing brands. The clothes were confirmed as counterfeits by the brand experts and the preliminary calculations came to an estimated value of R26 million,” said Gauteng provincial police spokesperson, Captain Kay Makhubela.

On the same day, SAPS arrested 80 undocumented immigrants during operation Okae Molao in a roadblock in Cosmo city. Three stolen motor vehicles were also recovered.

Makhubela said all arrested suspects were expected to appear in different magistrates’ courts in Gauteng in due course.

“Gauteng police management urge the community to continue to work with the police in the fight against crime by continuing to give information which leads to the arrests of the criminals,” concluded Makhubela.
