Food subsidies for less privileged residents in Johannesburg north-east

In their quest to supplement the City of Johannesburg in its work to fight hunger among needy people during the lockdown, Ward 81 residents are pledging support to fellow neighbours.

Those with the means have been donating food parcels to the less-privileged and unemployed during this difficult time.

According to Ward 81 councillor, Irene Rugheimer, more than 196 people have benefitted from the food parcels donated by private companies and individuals.

“The issue is that many are unemployed and don’t have money to feed their families… the lockdown has added to this in that many more are not earning and it is sad that we now have more families that don’t know where their next meal will come from,” said Rugheimer.

“We have so many [Good] Samaritans who continue to extend helping hands including local companies from here in the ward as well as outside our ward. We have received a variety of food including flour and oil.”

According to the councillor, any kind of food is welcome but it has to be healthy and not expired.

Those who wish to extend a helping hand are requested to do so and assist those who are less-advantaged in their respective communities.
