NOAH urgently needs your help

PARKTOWN – As part of their Social Responsibility Programme, Roedean appealed to the public to help save an NPO with funds to keep operating.

Roedean School SA writes:

Many of you will know of or remember nurturing orphans of Aids for humanity (Noah) fondly, if you were a member of Lambs House at Roedean. If your daughter is currently a member of Lambs House at the school in Parktown, she may be involved in the Monday House Social Responsibility Project that pairs with 21 pupils (grades 5 to 8) from Noah on a Monday afternoon to build literacy and numeracy and assist with homework. The younger Noah learners attend the Link Literacy and Numeracy Programme assisted by Bears and Kats volunteers, consolidating the intervention Roedean has with the Noah learners.

Noah, a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) and public benefit organisation (PBO), has been one of Roedean’s community partners since 2004. This inner-city refuge for learners after school serves to keep children who are orphaned or vulnerable, off the street, until there is an adult back ‘home’. Even home is often a rudimentary shelter, and these pupils are exposed to poverty and a life that does not hold much security. Not only does Noah offer security but also a cooked meal, psychosocial support, and for many of the learners, it may be the only meal they receive in a day.

Currently, there are 65 registered Noah learners, but the project has the capacity of 95 children. At present there is a waiting list due to the funding constraints. There are three staff members at the NPO – two-child activity coordinators, one also being the facility’s coordinator and one cook. There are two volunteers assisting with child activity coordination and housekeeping. The staff members receive a modest wage and the running costs of the organisation amount to roughly R20 000 per month. At present, Noah receives a monthly grant of R20 000 from the iMvula Trust, which itself is cash strapped and this donation will come to an end at the end of March.

The social responsibility programme at Roedean, feels a great sense of responsibility to this project, as a culture of reciprocity has developed between the Roedean girls and the Noah learners. In addition, Roedean’s transformation policy challenges us to work beyond the walls of Roedean in our community in a meaningful way.

Monthly pledges will give the organisation the security it needs, allowing for growth, but most of all ensure the learners who attend Noah, a better future. Roedean can attest to Noah having good governance; and Section 18A certificates may be issued by Noah, as they hold both an NPO and PBO numbers.
