Joburg Central detectives arrest two suspects for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition

JOHANNESBURG CENTRAL – Police received a tip-off that led to the arrest of two females who were in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Johannesburg Central Police Station detectives arrested two female suspects between the ages of 24 and 29 for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Joburg Central at 3pm on 21 July.

Station spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele said police received a tip-off from a community member about two females in possession of a firearm. They rushed to the building on the corner of Helen Joseph (previously President) and Nugget streets and recovered a firearm with live rounds.

According to Mbele, the preliminary investigation revealed that a male victim was robbed of his firearm on 16 July, while in the same building. “He failed to report it stolen and will be charged for firearm negligence,” he added.

Mbele said an investigation is under way and the suspects will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
