Police track down four suspects in connection with hijacked cigarette truck

The four suspects were immediately arrested for possession of presumed stolen goods.

Four suspects were detained at the Norwood Police Station after being found with cigarettes worth R600 000. Norwood police spokesperson Sergeant Eric Masotsha confirmed that the arrest took place after a tip-off from a community member to the police. The tip-off received on 19 November alerted the police of three cars involved in the hijacking of a truck in Marlboro.

“The Provincial Serious Crime Unit then embarked on a lookout for the cars with the suspects. They spotted the three cars in a convoy driving towards the M1 freeway from Corlett Drive. Our provincial colleagues then called for back-up which was quick,” Sergeant Masotsha explained.

He added the police arrived at the scene, identified themselves to the suspects and asked to search the vehicles. They then found the cigarettes in each of the three vehicles and asked the car occupants where they were taking the cigarettes to and they said they had been sent to deliver to an unknown address whose details they would get on the way.

“The four suspects were immediately arrested for possession of presumed stolen goods. The owner of the hijacked truck was called to the scene and identified his product which was then handed over to him after some paperwork. The suspects were then detained at Norwood Police Station.”

He added that all three cars were impounded to SAPS Vehicle Unit for further police investigation. The suspects are set to appear in court soon after investigations are concluded.

Sergeant Masotsha said, “Thank you to the community member for coming forward because now the owner of the products can smile again.”
