Sculptures symbolise a tough schooling year

MELROSE – Check out the sculptures designed by local artist James Delaney.

The Grade 7 leavers of Pridwin Prep have left behind an important symbol of a tough year at their school thanks to the creative work of renowned local artist James Delaney.

The school approached Delaney after seeing his magnificent artwork displayed at The Wilds in Houghton. They wanted Delaney to sculpt an artwork symbolising the difficult year it has been.

Delany said, “I wanted to create something that would show what had been a disruptive, challenging year. Masks have been a strong symbol of 2020. I came up with the idea of two children walking carrying books and musical instruments, showing the different sides of school life.”

Delaney added that he liked the fact that the sculpture was of boys moving forward, showing positivity amid the challenges.

Headmaster Patrick Lees said, “It was important that the gift the Grade 7s gave to the school symbolised this year and will find that, in a very eclectic way, the Grade 7s and James Delaney have done just that.

“Our Grade 7s have shown courage and strength during these unprecedented times and it has definitely been a historic year – no-one will ever forget it which our sculptures will symbolise.”

Delaney said he had been surprised by the positive reaction the sculptures have garnered on social media.

On the plaque accompanying the sculpture it reads: ‘During hardship, the hero within each of us is revealed’.

Delaney wishes the Grade 7 Class of 2020 good luck as they move forward in their schooling journey.
