The benefits of enrolling your child in an all-girls’ school were shared by first-hand experiencers

ROSEBANK – The three head girls at St Teresa's School revealed how and why their school is ideal to learn in.

Just a few days before the St Teresa’s School Open Day, the school shared their rich history and many other reasons why potential learners should enrol. St Teresa’s three head girls from the high school in Rosebank shared all of this through a social media takeover of the Rosebank Killarney Gazette with the hashtag #RosieTakeover.

Head girl Pia Eklund kicked off proceedings as she took readers on a virtual tour of the Grade 00 to 3 campus in Craighall Park where she started off her St Teresa’s School journey. She also interviewed the Grade 00 girls who said what they like about the school are the monkey bars although they couldn’t do them.

In 2019, St Teresa’s completed the construction of a world-class new building designed to facilitate blended learning in the Senior Primary School and head girl Kagiso Ngoye was next-up with a virtual tour of the building. Kagiso also chatted to the Grade 7 girls from Senior Primary School principal Jean Carey’s leadership programme. The programme has been going on for the past three years and is aimed at developing the leadership skills of Grade 7 learners.

Head girl Relebogile Selokela, who joined the school in Grade 8, took readers through a virtual journey of St Teresa’s 90th birthday celebrated in 2020. For the video, the school dug back into the 1930 archives when women’s education at St Teresa’s began.

A question-and-answer session closed off the virtual tour. The three head girls held a discussion with St Teresa’s High School principal Elsa De Bod about the benefits of sending your daughters to an all-girls school among many others.

On sharing the benefits, Relebogile said, “As girls, we understand each other and what we’re going through and connect with each other much more. A lot of the times women tend to bring each other down but a girls’ school teaches you to build each other through a feminine community.”

For Kagiso, “One of the advantages of going to an all-girls school is the bond that you form with other girls as you go through similar situations. The family aspect of the school runs so deep and last for long as some of the former Rosies would testify.”

In Pia’s view, “It is a safe environment where people feel that it’s okay to express things, have opinions and not be afraid to sometimes say things that might sometimes be difficult to discuss.”

In conclusion, principal De Bod said, “The biggest benefit is the confidence that the girls get just by speaking in front of others and not being afraid or self-conscious especially when you’re going through those stages where everyone’s shy in. We’re also living in a world where women need to celebrate each other more and uplift one another and in a girls’ school you see that happening from a young age.”
