Ongoing water woes for Glenhazel residents
GLENHAZEL – Spokesperson for Joburg Water Eleanor Mavimbela said, “As a short-term intervention we are going to replace the water pipes at Summerway (500 metres), Sunny Road (500 metres) and Kingswood (380 metres)."
Water woes for Glenhazel residents have continued every day, sometimes twice a day, for months on end, according to Ward 72 councillor Lionel Greenberg.
The Gazette wrote about the water issues faced by Glenhazel residents in Frustration over water cuts [Week ending May 7].
Greenberg said that residents have become incredibly frustrated since the start of this year with the ongoing interruptions to water supply.
“Residents feel that they can’t keep paying out for services and be without. The City can’t keep redirecting our taxes to impoverished communities when our basic needs are not being attended to. We understand that there is a disparity in the City and the need to address this, but we still need services,” said Greenberg.

He said that residents submitted a petition to the City on June 21, requesting that the issues be attended to.
Greenberg said that a meeting was convened on June 23 with officials in order to finalise administrative issues surrounding the urgent pipe replacement project in the ward.
A spokesperson for Joburg Water Eleanor Mavimbela said, “We have been repairing burst pipes as and when they are reported in Glenhazel. These frequent burst pipes are caused by ageing infrastructure.
“As a short-term intervention, we are going to replace the water pipes at Summerway (500 metres), Sunny Road (500 metres) and Kingswood (380 metres).”
Greenberg said that contractors have been appointed and Joburg Water will be confirming the full details of where pipes and hydrants will be installed and date of commencement. The expected duration of the project is three months.
Greenberg commented on this intervention saying, “I believe something more sustainable is necessary. We need the 60-year-old infrastructure to be replaced. There is a lack of preventative maintenance in the City by all entities and this is very worrying.”
