Learner has drive to help

Rosebank – St Teresa's School learner has started a book drive to change the realities of the less fortunate.

A St Teresa’s School learner has started a book drive to gift the gift of reading to the less fortunate.

Grade 10 learner Hital Parbhoo started the book drive after visiting Zodiac Primary School with her mother and aunt to donate old books. There she found out about the unavailability of books from a teacher at the school.

“When I arrived at the school, one of the teachers, Mr Lalloo, welcomed us into his classroom and began to explain the joy these children experienced while reading a book, despite having to sometimes reread it due to the lack of availability of books. He told me how their eyes would light up and they would lose themselves in some fantasy world of dreams and wonder,” she said.

“I was informed on how these young readers hold onto a book for as long as they can, trying to cherish every moment with it.”

Hearing these stories and realising that the school does not have a library, made her heart melt. Hital added that her mother always taught her to give back in any way possible and she was inspired by Mr Lalloo as he is a passionate teacher and goes beyond his duties to make his learners’ realities better.

Hital aims to collect 1 000 children’s books which will be donated to the school. The biggest contribution they previously received was 550 books from the Rotary Humanitarian Centre.

This donation is open to anyone. Reading books for grades R–7 will be much appreciated and would be more appropriate as the receiving school is a primary school. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the book donation will run till Friday, August 6.

Details: To donate, contact Hital via cell at 073 355 2751 or via email at hitalparbhoo@gmail.com
