Suspect, who allegedly stole groceries, is behind bars
HILLBROW – The man, who allegedly hired a mini truck to deliver stolen groceries to one of the supermarkets in the Hillbrow precinct, is arrested.
Hillbrow police arrested a man (40) who failed to account for groceries that he was delivering to one of the supermarkets in the area.
The suspect allegedly hired a mini truck to deliver groceries for him. Police spotted him on July 19 within the Hillbrow police precinct.
When asked about receipts and proof of purchase of the groceries, he failed to account and could not produce the necessary documentation.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo said the truck driver, who was hired to deliver the items by the suspect, indicated he did not know if the items were stolen.
“He [the suspect] could not explain if the items were his. He indicated that he was going to offload at one of the supermarkets in the area,” he said.
The police indicated groceries could be among items stolen during the riots that ravaged the country in the previous week.
In other incidents, police arrested 22 suspects who committed various offences on the weekend of July 16 and 17.
Suspects were arrested for public drinking, transgressing the Disaster Management Act and selling alcohol while it is prohibited under Level 4 lockdown and without a liquor license.
