Stars shine for their community
NORWOOD – Young soccer stars from the Norwood Young Stars Academy, assisted by local officials, helped to clean the area by the Norwood Police Barracks and its premises on Sunday (August 8).
Young soccer enthusiasts from the Norwood Young Stars Academy recently honoured the local community by helping to clean the area around the Norwood Police Barracks.
This is a huge area to clean up, but clean-up organiser and Norwood Young Stars Academy owner Venita Masisi explained the children from all of the soccer academy’s divisions and age groups participated, and they were divided into sections, and each given an area to pay attention to on August 8.

The initiative was well-supported by the local authorities, with Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett, and authorities from the Lower Houghton Residents’ Association rolling up their sleeves to get involved.
These authorities, together with Adcock Ingram, Norwood SPAR, and #LeanOnMe campaign officials, kept the children fed and happy – and sanitised – as they made the area something to be proud of.
Venita Masisi said she had recognised a need for a clean-up of the area, and decided it was a way to honour the women in the area for Women’s Day. “The children played soccer on the Monday, so we chose to clean up on the Sunday.”

She said with the overhanging negativity around Covid-19, the third wave, and economic concerns, it was good to be involved in something positive. The children left the clean-up inspired, well-fed, well-exercised and ready for their soccer playing on the Monday.
“Hopefully this inspires other residents to step up for their community,” she said. “I noticed a need in the area because I stay in the neighbourhood but each person has something in their immediate area which can be addressed, by them stepping up and doing their part.”
