Schooled about the dangers of ‘lean’
WAVERLEY Learners from the Waverley Girls High School receive a lesson from the Norwood CPF, Norwood police and LifeLine about the dangers of sipping purple syrup.
Learners from Waverley Girls High School received lessons about the dangers of codeine through a drug awareness campaign at the school on September 15. The talk was put together by the Norwood Community Policing Forum (CPF) alongside LifeLine and the Norwood Police Station through the #LeanOnMe campaign.
The learners were educated about the dangers of substance abuse, particularly the misuse of codeine or ‘leaning’ which is popular among the youth.
“It only takes a mixture of cough syrup and a fizzy drink to create a substance that can have serious effects on the brain. It makes people lose their ability to stand up straight, they always need to be leaning on something, which gives sense to the name of the concoction – ‘lean’,” said Annie Hodes of the Norwood CPF.

They participated in fun and interactive conversations about ‘crushing the hype’ which is seen in public figures that use lean, building positivity and self-care among themselves and their peers.
The #LeanOnMe campaign aims to raise awareness about substance abuse and will be doing more campaigns in schools to teach learners not to lean.
