A clean-up in the park
MELROSE – James and Ethel Gray Park Foundation put together a clean-up operation of the Sandspruit River in an effort to preserve rivers and oceans.
James and Ethel Gray Park Foundation led a clean-up of the section of the Sandspruit River that runs through the park on September 26, World Rivers Day.
The clean-up was aimed at helping to reduce the volume of plastic waste that reaches rivers and in turn, oceans. The operation attracted more than 74 volunteers who helped collect six tons of plastic and biodegradable material from the river.

“Preserving rivers is crucial to maintaining sustainable ecosystems. With such targeted river clean-ups, we are confident of contributing to efforts of reducing the staggering estimated statistic of up to 12.7 million metric tons of plastic that enter the ocean, annually,” said chairman of the James and Ethel Gray Park Foundation, Sunil Geness.
“We emphasise that community involvement is key to the long-term success of environmental projects. We, therefore, encourage the community to support further clean-up operations of the James and Ethel Gray Park and surrounds.”

The foundation extended its gratitude to Thrushton Body Corporate for their donation towards the river clean-up, Gourmet Grocer for the lunch and refreshments provided, and the volunteers for their participation.
