Walking a mile in the Zoo Lady’s shoes
PARKVIEW – Johannesburg Zoo showcases the ups and downs in the life of veterinary nurse, Akhira Singh.
Johannesburg Zoo afforded the public to spend a day with the ‘Zoo lady’, veterinary nurse Akhira Singh.
Johannesburg Zoo dedicated September 28 when the public could experience what a day in a veterinary nurse’s work schedule entailed.
This from the comfort of their homes through a fun and interactive live Instagram feed hosted on the zoo’s page. Singh showed the viewers how she conducted daily health checks on the animals. One such case involved the zoo’s oldest lioness, Dharma who had broken her upper right canine and had to receive a root canal procedure to aid with the pain and the discomfort. The procedure was shown live and Dharma was placed under anaesthetic with viewers able to watch the process.

Singh became a veterinary nurse after experiencing the passion and attachment of the profession while volunteering at an animal welfare clinic in Mamelodi. She had always loved and cared for animals since a very tender age and volunteering just assured her of her feelings towards animals.

Singh told Rosebank Killarney Gazette that she loved her job and said she had the utmost respect for veterinary nurses all over the world for the work they did on a daily basis.
“Patient care is one of the most important parts of being a veterinary nurse. You have to love animals and understand that they will sometimes face medical challenges,” she concluded.
