Gardener finds temporary solution for pothole

CRAIGHALL – Brian Gabela has temporarily closed the large pothole with some sand.

A pothole on Alexandra Avenue in Craighall that started developing in December last year has gotten larger since the rains began.

Motorists using the road have complained that they can’t even drive around it because it was so large.

A gardener who works in a residential complex opposite the pothole, Brian Gabela, has taken it upon himself to alleviate the situation. Motorists using the road could see him on the morning of January 10 filling in the pothole with sand.

“I came back to work today [January 10] and I could see motorists were struggling to pass because the pothole has spread horizontally almost [over] the entire road section. The problem also affects my work as I have to use a wheelbarrow. I will keep putting in sand till the municipality decides to come and fix it,” Gabela said.

He added it all began with a burst pipe in November last year when Johannesburg Water dug up the road but did not return to fill in the hole.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) were contacted and on January 5, Kelebogile Mafa of JRA responded, “Thank you for your query. We will follow up with our regional operations department and revert soonest.”
