Super creative youngsters come together to make people laugh
GREENSIDE – You can have a laugh every Wednesday evening for free.
Laughter has not only proved to be the best medicine but a necessity in the times we live in. Four young men host a comedy show in Greenside every Wednesday night.
The founders of Thirst Comedy, who matriculated in 2019, are Jediael Bauer, Abdula Skink, Khabane Moloi and Mahara Chauke.
According to Bauer, the comedy group came into being thanks to two ‘super-creative’ companies that came together. “Me and Mahara are a part of Horizon Entertainment (where they make skits and music) while Khabane and Abdula are from False (which is a print and paint art company).
“So Abdula and I were just talking randomly one day and decided we wanted to do a comedy show. We then drove around looking for a venue. This happened this year and this is our fifth show. We started on the 2nd of March. We then found a venue and this is the same venue where we host the art show,” Bauer said.
Skink added that the comedy show is all about giving people a platform to showcase their work and making sure that they are seen and what they’re doing is valid. “Comedians that come throughout the night – some are highly experienced with their own Netflix specials – however, we prefer to start the night with people who have done four or five shows so that every single comedian can feel accommodated.
“We have our own sound effects that personalise the whole experience. This is also just a great place to network.”
Khabane said the group made efforts to give a ‘homely community’ to the show because people needed to feel comfortable and invited. He added, “We wanted to target the youth as well because I feel like there are not enough clubs that introduce young people to comedy. Comedy is an inclusive thing.”
On why they allow free entry to their shows, Khabane said the best way to support them is to buy things they sell at the venue including their ‘False’ shirts, as well as downloading, sharing or liking their videos and music on social media.
Chauke added that this was only stage one, as they looked forward to filling up theatres, stadiums and established venues and perhaps bringing Trevor Noah to their stage one day.
