Exposed Bramley infrastructure sparks safety concerns in Ward 74

Ward councillor warns that delays in backfilling and road repairs leave key utility equipment vulnerable to vandalism.

Ward 74 councillor Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku remains dissatisfied with the state of infrastructure in Bramley following an oversight inspection on October 13.

Kayser-Echeozonjoku visited a recurring leak on Corlett Drive that stemmed from the pavement.

Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said on October 14 that the entity had attended to and repaired the leak, with backfilling completed.

The outstanding work relates to tar reinstatement, which has been escalated to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) for action.

Exposed infrastructure risks

The councillor also visited the corner of Junction Road, where an excavation that has remained open for more than a month continues to pose a safety hazard.

“I am furious because more than a month ago, we visited this site with Johannesburg Water, who said they would attend to the excavation,” said Kayser-Echeozonjoku. “Entities not repairing infrastructure timeously are putting it at risk for vandalism because pipes and equipment are exposed.”

Johannesburg Water was sent questions on October 13 and is expected to respond within 24 to 48 hours.

The publication will update the article as information is received from the entities.
