Flip Flop Day raises R2 million for CHOC

Lewis said the funds raised through the initiative will be used to provide psychosocial support to families as well as improvements to the various CHOC houses.

The Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC) thanks the public for supporting their most successful Flip Flop Day to date, which raised over R2 million.

A number of stakeholders gathered together at CHOC House in Saxonwold on April 5 to celebrate the success of the day and thank some of the major contributors.

CHOC CEO Hedley Lewis said, “Flip Flop Day was a success thanks to the help from the community.”

He explained that CHOC assists to support families as they go through a journey with cancer with their children. He said that the real heroes are the healthcare workers, such as doctors and nurses, who are with the patients for every step of the journey.

“Today is a culmination of a great journey over the last few weeks. Numerous schools, businesses and community members have come on board from across the country.

“We want to promote hope, love and care for these families but the day is also about creating awareness and sharing early warning signs so that patients can detect cancer early and have a better prognosis.”

The campaign raised just north of R2 million. PNA product and marketing executive Herman Botha handed over a cheque for R1 million to CHOC after selling 84 642 stickers in their stores across the country. The retailer topped up the donations from the sticker sales to make a cheque for R1 million.

Lewis said the funds raised through the initiative will be used to provide psychosocial support to families as well as improvements to the various CHOC houses. “This is the biggest year ever and it shows that South Africa really cares and dug deep to support us,” concluded Lewis.
