Incredibe community spirit leads to win
Be Brave sponsor presents Parktown Girls with an R20 000 cheque.
A show of incredible enthusiasm, courage and spirit was a winning move for Parktown High School for Girls.
The girls rose to the Be Brave, Mzansi dance challenge last year and danced their hearts out in their entry video.
Although they did not win the main prize money, the school has since been presented with a cheque for R20 000 for their community spirit by the main sponsor of the challenge, Adcock Ingram OTC, and its managing director in April 19. Kerry Liss of marketing and communications at the school said the cheque was handed over to school headmistress Tracey Megom, by Adcock Ingram OTC, represented by Nicole Capper. “We are so proud of each and every girl in our school”, said Liss.

Deputy principal Gail Davidson said the challenge came at a time when they needed something to remind them they could stand tall after a year and a half of Covid-19. “Doing the Be Brave challenge exceeded all expectations, brought the school together and made us feel like Parktown again. Our pride came through and it was the most uplifting experience.”
Grade 8 learner Erica van Staden said the word bravery to her means being able to face the challenges and also being able to speak up when those challenges are getting too much.
Megom said, “Our school prides itself in the young women that we produce and the country really needs strong, confident young women in all aspects of life – whether it’s business, politics, teachers, and so on. Hopefully, we are building up women who will take up leadership positions in our country.”
Head girl Katleho Ntlhakana said it is important for young women in this country to be brave because ‘we are faced with so many challenges. She said challenges range from gender-based violence to simply being stereotyped based on gender. “I feel as though we not only need to be brave to break the stereotype but to break the different barriers we face in society,” said Katleho.
In conclusion, Davidson said the cheque gift was a delightful highlight to seal off the term – the school always has a need for funds for extra activities to develop the girls, fix school grounds and so on.
