Give warmth to those in need
The aim is to collect 1 500 or more blankets for those in need.
Over the next few weeks, the temperatures in Johannesburg will plummet.
Not only will the homeless have to cope with the challenges of getting a meal but shelter and warmth will also be major issues.
The faith communities of Parkview, in this case St Columba’s Presbyterian Church and the St Francis of Assisi Anglican Church, along with the Parkview Resident’s Association, will once again be involved in a joint project to collect 1 500 or more blankets for those in need.
Project organiser Geoff van Heerden said, “Last year’s drive was a spectacular success, thanks to the immense generosity of our wonderful donors. In a four-week period, the project raised sufficient funds to buy 1 412 blankets.”
He added that this year’s objective will be to provide a warm blanket to each of the clients of St Columba’s and St Francis feeding schemes, while most of the blankets will be directed towards homeless shelters in Jeppestown Mould Empower Serve (MES), Rosebank, Delta Park and elsewhere. The drive will be ongoing until May 23 at which point deliveries will begin to the joint beneficiaries.

“A single blanket costs R85 courtesy to a deal struck by Morningside Rotary with the factory. This is nearly R30 cheaper than buying an equivalent blanket from a store. Bulk purchases are then made by St Columba’s on behalf of the project partners,” said Van Heerden.
