Criminal charges laid against Ramaphosa at Rosebank Police Station
Presidency responds to criminal charges laid against President Cyril Ramaphosa.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has responded to criminal charge claims against him.
According to a statement by his spokesperson Vincent Magwenya, the president had been made aware through a media statement that former State Security Agency director-general Arthur Fraser had laid a complaint with the SAPS against him.
In the statement, Fraser said that he had taken the ‘unprecedented step’ to lay the charges on June 1 after the alleged crime (burglary) took place on February 9, 2020. “The details of the charges and the supporting evidence, including photographs, bank accounts, video footage and names are contained in my statement filed with the Rosebank Police Station.
The charges emanate from the theft of millions of US dollars [in excess of $4 million], concealed within the premises of the president’s Phala Phala farm in Waterberg, Limpopo, by criminals who were colluding with his domestic worker. They also include defeating the ends of justice, kidnapping suspects, their interrogation on his property and bribery,” stated Fraser.
Magwenya said president Ramaphosa was clear that there is no basis for the claims of criminal conduct that have been made against him in Fraser’s statement. “The president can confirm that a robbery took place at the president’s farm in Limpopo on or around February 9, 2020 in which proceeds from the sale of game were stolen.
The president was attending an African Union Summit in Addis Ababa at the time the incident occurred,” said Magwenya.
“On being advised of the robbery, president Ramaphosa reported the incident to the head of the Presidential Protection Unit of the SAPS for investigation. President Ramaphosa stands ready to cooperate with any law enforcement investigation of these matters.”
National SAPS spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said, “The SAPS can confirm that a case of money laundering, defeating the ends of justice and kidnapping has been registered at the Rosebank Police Station this afternoon [June 1]. The SAPS confirm that due processes will follow.”
