Gupta brothers arrested in the UAE

The infamous Guptas who owned properties in Saxonwold arrested after nearly six years.

The Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services confirmed the arrest of former Saxonwold residents, brothers Rajesh and Atul Gupta.

In a statement shared by the ministry on June 6, the justice department stated that it had received information from law enforcement authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that fugitives of justice, namely, Rajesh and Atul Gupta had been arrested.

“Discussions between various law enforcement agencies in the UAE and South Africa on the way forward are ongoing. The South African government will continue to cooperate with the UAE,” stated the ministry.

The Gupta brothers fled South Africa in 2016 after reports of them being embroiled in State Capture had surfaced.

In 2018 in an online article titled Video: Sars, police and Assets Forfeiture Unit officials reportedly raid Gupta compound on Saxonwold [ April 16] the Gazette broke the news that the Hawks had raided the residence of the Guptas.

According to State Capture Inquiry reports, this residence was where the Gupta brothers had summoned several ministers and other high-ranking politicians.

In 2019, the Gazette reported in an article titled Auction sells Gupta home for R2.6 million  [ November 20] that the Gupta’s Saxonwold home had been auctioned by Park Village Auctions.

Park Village Auctions had stated that the sale was subject to confirmation by the business rescue practitioners who would accept or reject the offer and there would be three further Gupta properties sold in Saxonwold followed by houses in other suburbs.

This move had been carried out in effort to remedy the financial distress, and settle debts with creditors awaiting payment.
