Outreach programmes impact communities

Organisation based in Percelia Estate conducts 90th annual general meeting.

The Union of Jewish Women in Percelia Estate hosted its 90th annual general meeting virtually. The online Zoom webinar was hosted on May 19.

Office and projects manager Vanessa Weltman said, “Despite another challenging year, we managed to make a difference to the lives of so many people in our Jewish community as well as in our varied and long-standing outreach projects.”

Chairman Ingrid Koor touched on these successful projects of Union of Jewish Women (UJW), including Kosher Mobile Meals (KMM), the sewing empowerment school, the Alexandra Feeding Scheme and Aftercare, the Hillbrow soup kitchen and Bags for New Beginnings.

“Our generous donors and dedicated volunteers were thanked for helping us to continue our work in such a meaningful way. The Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Philip Gersun who shows great dedication in delivering meals to KMM recipients, fetching guests for Friendship Club lunch, providing CD players and audio books for KMM recipients and so much more.”

Weltman added, “We moved into our new UJW home last year in Percelia Estate which has already hosted our 90th birthday celebration, a cooking demo, adult education division lectures and our much-loved Friendship Club lunches.”

Guest speaker Batya Shmueli spoke emotionally about her journey from living on the banks of the Blue Nile, to being airlifted at the age of 11 to Israel. A journey from Ethiopia to a place she had heard about from stories of the Torah.

“Very motivating and uplifting. We look forward to a successful year ahead,” concluded Weltman.
