School welcomes police search
Parkview police conduct school search at Greenside High School.
Parkview police conducted a search for drugs at Greenside High School.
The spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said the search was conducted on May 24. Learners of five Grade 8–12 classes that were identified by the school principal and the school safety officer were searched.
“School-based crime prevention is intended to enrich the participation of police officers in promoting a safe and orderly school environment. Prevention and early intervention are the most reliable and cost-effective ways to support schools in consistently delivering teaching and learning in an environment that is physically and socially safe,” said Sibeko.
The Parkview Police Station Commander Colonel Devan Govender said, “Our children are precious and we want them to have a safe place in which to learn and grow. We expect schools to be safe and healthy. Drug taking among young people can make school a less safe and healthy place for all learners, whether they use drugs or not.
The police will continue to conduct the school searches in the area and ensure that the learners and educators are in a conducive environment.”
In terms of the South African Schools Act, no person may bring an object or illegal drug onto school premises of a school or have such object or drug in his or her possession on school premises or during any school activity, unless authorised by the principal.
