Last week the community of Orange Grove organised a clean-up to remember the importance of World Environment Day
Shovels and rakes were used in Orange Grove's clean-up to commemorate World Environment Day.
World Environment Day saw efforts from the Orange Grove community who came out in numbers to clean up the community.
Norwood Community Policing Forum (CPF) member and organiser Cebi Ngqinambi said the clean-up was a regular activity for residents in the area.
“It is not the first time this is done, every month there is an activity of this nature. We educate community members about environmental issues while we keep our areas clean. Our purpose is to encourage participation among members and create responsibility.”
A resident in the area, Mbali Langeni, said a clean environment mattered to her.
“I want to live in a clean environment, and as a homeowner I wouldn’t want the value of my area to depreciate due to the dirty and illegal dumping that constantly happens.”
Langeni added it was important for the community to be a part of the clean-up.
“I feel as residents we need to take a stand and ensure that our area is clean. This was not the first time I was part of a clean-up. Every time there is a clean-up I try to participate – this may be the fourth time I am helping – and I was telling the organiser of the event that we need to have such clean-ups at least twice a month.”
