Learners exposed to IsiZulu and Afrikaans outside the classroom

To promote and develop an understanding of IsiZulu and Afrikaans languages to the Ridge Boys.

The Ridge School Grade 5s had the time of their lives during an educational tour of the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria on June 13.

IsiZulu and Afrikaans are the first and third most spoken languages in South Africa. The Ridge School has embarked on an immersion programme where their boys are exposed to these languages, history, and culture outside the classroom.

Tina Mashobane, head of Afrikaans, said the aim of the visit was to promote and develop an understanding as well as an appreciation of South Africa and its rich cultural heritage.

“Our learners thoroughly enjoyed the outing and gained a new awareness of the Afrikaner and Zulu peoples’ roles and contributions to South Africa in the 20th century,” Mashobane said.
