Pyjama and teddy bear picnic festival at DSJ

A Parktown-based German school allows its learners to use their German in an informal and natural setting at a school festival.

The Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg (DSJ) Kindergarten learners enjoyed a pyjama and teddy bear picnic festival on June 7.

Both festivals aimed to give the children opportunities to be in a social setting with other children in their age group and learn to share and communicate.

Kamogelo Mochadibane, deputy principal of the DSJ Regenbogen-Kids, said that the kindergarten learners also had an opportunity to learn social skills as they enjoyed a short movie while sharing popcorn with their friends.

She explained that this was for educational purposes and other underlying skills being learnt such as language.

“Our school is a German school in a very English-speaking environment and such social gatherings give all children opportunities to use their German language in an informal and natural setting, increasing their vocabulary and improving communication skills.”

Mochadibane said it was a successful day because friendships were formed, and learners had fun for the first time being allowed to come to school in their pyjamas and to bring a stuffed animal.
