St Mary’s School Waverly’s headmistress, Deanne King highlights the school’s 2023 milestones.
The school marked a significant milestone, celebrating its 135th birthday, making St Mary’s the oldest school in Johannesburg.
King said a highlight of the year was the outstanding performance of the class of 2022, “With dedication, hard work and the unwavering support of our teachers and staff, 95% of the matric class achieved an average of 60% or more. Another impressive statistic was three of our learners attained 99% in Mathematics, showcasing their dedication to academic excellence.”
The arts played a pivotal role as well, the school presented the drama production, Naledi: An African Journey, a new musical by Franco Prinsloo. Inspired by traditional South African storytelling, Naledi tells the story of courage, adventure and magic.
On the sporting front, St Mary’s secured victory in the inter-high prestige and A team swimming galas and claimed the girls’ title at the South African School’s Rowing Championships.
The headmistress concluded that the staff and learners looked forward to the opening of a new building, Khanyisa.
“This state-of-the-art facility will provide our learners with even more opportunities for growth, learning and development, ensuring that St Mary’s continues to be a beacon of excellence in education.”
