St John’s and Parktown Boys get a slam dunk at inter-provincial tournament

Both teams won the finals but it was basketball that won the day.

Several local boys and girls were selected for the South African U16 basketball teams at the recent inter-provincial tournament held in Umlazi, KZN from March 25 to 28.
The players represented Gauteng in the boys’ and girls’ teams.

The boys’ semi-final of the Inter-provincial tournament sees Gauteng (yellow) vs Western Cape.

The four boys selected for the South African national team were Reza Creamer from St John’s College, Simtha Radebe from Elite Sporting and Cultural Academy based at the Wanderers, and Chibike Okafor and Jason Cele (both from Parktown Boy’s High School). The team was coached by Miguel Pereira.

The six girls selected for the South African national team were Bokang Lefakane, Mamello Nalenyane, Zuri Jimerson, Jael Tirkaso, Ntsakisi Makhuba and Tintswalo Siwele. They were coached by Nosipho Njokweni from Redhill School.

The boys’ team beat KZN 63–56 in a hard-fought final, and the girls’ team beat Western Cape to take the trophy.

Awards were as follows:

  • Bokang was selected as a Girls’ All-Star player as well as the Girls’ Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
  • Simtha won Boys’ All-Star Player as well as Boys’ Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
  • Mamello was selected as a Girls’ All-Star player and received an award for Best Defensive Player at the tournament.
  • Reza was selected as a Boys’ All-Star player and received an award for Best Shooter at the tournament.
