This year's walk aims to both celebrate and educate on human rights and democracy.

Children and elders who gathered at the Constitutional Square to prepare for the ‘We, the People’ walk – dressed in black T-shirts, waving small South African flags while singing struggle songs.

Constitution Hill’s acting CEO, Siyabonga Hlongwane said, “This year’s walk aims to both celebrate and educate on human rights, democracy, and constitutionalism which are the foundational principles upheld by Constitution Hill.”

Hlongwane emphasised that the goal of the walk was to educate people about the Bill of Rights and reflect on 30 years of democracy.

Preceding the 5km walk around the city is the Thand’uMzansi campaign activation, which encourages active citizenship by engaging citizens in activities such as reading the constitution’s preamble, raising the flag, and singing the national anthem.

Representatives from various sectors accompanied participants along the route, facilitated discussions, and showcased art and placards that enabled walkers to express their views artistically.

Walkers were encouraged to take up a ‘right’ as enshrined in the Bill of Rights and amplify it through artistic posters. A drumming activation symbolically honoured those who sacrificed for our freedom and amplified the voices of those who continue to suffer social injustices.
