Kyle Jacobs takes over as Ward 87 councillor following by-election victory

DA continues to receive strong support in Johannesburg.

Ward 87 held its by-elections on August 28, following the resignation of the previous councillor, Bridget Steer. The election saw residents of the Johannesburg ward turning out to cast their votes in a closely watched race. After the ballots were tallied, the Democratic Alliance’s Kyle Jacobs emerged victorious, securing the position of the new councillor for Ward 87.

The DA’s success in this by-election reflects a notable increase in voter support. “Ward 87, Johannesburg, saw a significant surge in backing for the DA, with our share of the vote growing from 65.2% in 2021 to 83.17% in 2024,” the party announced.
This result marks a decisive win for the DA in the area, indicating a strong mandate for Jacobs as he takes on his new role.

As the newly elected councillor, Jacobs is expected to address key issues in the ward, focusing on service delivery, community safety, and infrastructure development. His victory continues the DA’s efforts to strengthen its presence in Johannesburg, with Ward 87 being a significant stronghold for the party.
