Parkview race driver Andrew Horne holds four Formula Ford Championships

Horne competes in the national championships, the South African Endurance Series.

Drawn in by race cars, the history of the sport, and the sound of the on-track battles, Parkview’s race driver Andrew Horne is passionate about motorsport.

The four-time Formula Ford Championship holder began racing in 2002 in an old Formula Vee and loves single-seaters such as Formula Fords and Formula GTIs.
He owns a Ligier JS49 sports prototype and competes in the national championship, the South African Endurance Series (SAES).
“I am competing in both the SAES and the Sports and GT category, which are short sprint races before the endurance race.”

He noted that motorsport was a constant challenge.
“It could be learning about a new car and the technical challenges to make it reliable, a circuit you don’t know, conditions constantly changing. Motorsport is also an expensive sport that takes huge amounts of time both on and off track.”
Horne added so many elements needed to come together to succeed which included meticulous car preparation, driver preparation, ability, and luck.

“In all the years I have been doing it, I have never stopped learning, which is what keeps you coming back.”

Besides being a race driver, he works in the family business that supplies pigments to the coatings, plastic, and ink industries.

“The racing calendar is normally out well in advance so I try and plan around that. Thankfully, with modern technology, you can always work remotely which helps.”

Horne advised aspiring racers to never stop working and learning; the bad days will knock you down but will make you appreciate the good ones a 100 times more. The camaraderie and friendships are also a huge part of the race.
