The Wanderers Club became a beacon of support and solidarity as the Arthritis Foundation hosted a special Lupus Awareness Day on May 10.
The event aimed to shed light on lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects thousands of people, while also honouring the lives of those who have lived with the condition with courage, strength, and grace.

The day kicked off with an air of excitement as attendees gathered to learn more about lupus – what it is, how it affects the body, and why awareness is so vital. Lupus occurs when the body’s immune system, instead of protecting against harmful invaders, mistakenly attacks its tissues and organs. This can cause widespread inflammation, damage to joints, skin, and organs, and other serious complications. Because its symptoms can mimic other conditions, lupus is often hard to diagnose, which makes raising awareness and fostering understanding crucial to ensuring timely treatment.
However, Lupus Awareness Day was more than just about education – it was also about celebrating life and the resilience of those affected by the disease. A particularly emotional part of the day was the tribute to Marcelle Batista and Amogelang Mailula, two women whose spirits were as strong as the dance moves they loved.
Batista and Mailula passed away after long battles with lupus, but their legacy lived on through their passion for dance. Despite the challenges that lupus presented, they continued to dance, each step a testament to their resilience and determination. To honour their memory, a group of dancers took to the floor, performing in their name and bringing the room to life with joy and movement.

Throughout the morning, attendees had the chance to engage in meaningful conversations, learning more about lupus and its impact on those living with the disease. Informational sessions offered valuable insights into the complexities of lupus, while providing practical advice on how to manage the condition. The event encouraged open discussions, where participants could share their experiences and learn from one another in a supportive environment.
A highlight of the morning was the dance performances honouring Batista and Mailula. These lively displays were a tribute to their deep love for dancing, despite their battles with lupus. The performances embodied resilience, joy, and the refusal to let lupus define their lives. The vibrant energy in the room reflected their spirits, reminding everyone of the power of perseverance, even in the face of adversity.
The morning wrapped up with light refreshments and an opportunity for attendees to connect further, share stories, and reflect on the importance of raising awareness for lupus. It was a short but meaningful event, filled with heartfelt tributes, education, and a strong sense of community. The gathering served as a reminder that through unity and understanding, we can make a difference in the lives of those living with lupus.
